Arsenal’s transfer plans have been ruined by Louis van Gaal with ‘priority’ target Lisandro Martinez now in the sights of Erik ten Hag and Man United June 21, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Arsenal’s chances of landing their ‘priority’ summer target, Lisandro Martinez, have been dealt a blow by an unlikely source – Louis van Gaal.

It was earlier reported that the Ajax centre-back was the subject of a €30million [£25m] offer from the Gunners, and was keen on a move after being named the Dutch champions’ Player of the Year.

Now though, the two parties will have likely been impacted by Van Gaal’s intervention which has also made Martinez a top target for Manchester United.

The Netherlands boss has reportedly influenced fellow Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, telling him a move to Old Trafford will dent his chances of appearing at the 2022 World Cup.

With big names such as Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane already at United, Timber would likely spend the start of his Premier League career on the bench, ruling him out of Qatar.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is believed to be keen on bringing reinforcements from Amsterdam along with him to England, which will see Martinez bumped up the list with Timber out of the frame.

talkSPORT’s Dutch football correspondent, Marcel Van Der Kraan, explained: “Lisandro Martinez could be tempted away.

“He’s one of those players who would kick all the walls in if they don’t let him go. Martinez has done really well at Ajax, he’s a real fighter.

“I don’t think he would have been under the light of Ten Hag had they got Timber, but Louis van Gaal is putting his foot in the transfer policy of Manchester United and is advising players to stay where they are instead of joining United, so it’s been a bit more difficult for Ten Hag.”

United stumbled to their worst ever Premier League campaign last season, not only with a low of 58 points, but the 57 goals they conceded is also a new record.

Ten Hag’s specific brand of football has seen him linked to a number of stars from his Eredivisie winning squad, putting both Timber and Martinez under the microscope.
