Arsenal stepping up James Maddison transfer bid and could offer Leicester Reiss Nelson or Ainsley Maitland-Niles to sweeten deal July 21, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer

Arsenal could offer Leicester two fringe players in a bid to sign James Maddison, reports claim.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with the England playmaker, who only signed a new four-year deal with the Foxes last summer.

Maddison is a ‘key’ target for Arsenal this summer

Arsenal are in desperate need of a creative midfielder following Martin Odegaard’s return to Real Madrid.

The Norwegian starred in a loan spell with Mikel Arteta’s side last season, but will now aim to force his way into a Los Blancos team looking to win a Spanish title in the upcoming campaign.

The Mail claim Maddison is a ‘key’ transfer target for Arsenal, who will have to pay in excess of £50million to have any hope of landing him.

The report adds the Gunners could offer Reiss Nelson or Ainsley Maitland-Niles to the Foxes to sweeten the deal.

Nelson, who has just one year left on his contract, made only nine appearances for Arsenal last season, while Maitland-Niles, a target for Leicester in January, suffered relegation with West Brom in a loan spell.

Maddison was tipped to make the England squad for their March friendlies following a fine run of form.

However, an untimely hip injury prevented that from happening as he then failed to score or assist in his final 10 matches of the season when returning to fitness.

He was also left out of the starting XI in Leicester’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, but he did come off the bench in the second-half.

Arsenal are looking to improve on a disappointing eighth-placed finish last season with Arteta already bringing in two new faces.

Left-back Nuno Tavares was signed for £8m from Benfica and Belgian wonderkid Albert Sambi Lokonga arrived in a £15m deal from Anderlecht.
