Antonio Rudiger scores first Real Madrid goal with volley as Federico Valverde nets stunning solo effort in win over Mallorca to reclaim top spot from Barcelona September 12, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
Real Madrid maintained their 100 per cent start to the LaLiga season with a 4-1 win against Mallorca.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are now the only team in Europe’s top five leagues who have not dropped any points at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
Madrid look like strong contenders to retain their LaLiga title, but they did have a scare early on against Mallorca.
Vedat Muriqi gave the visitors the lead after 35 minutes, before Federico Valverde restored parity in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the half.
It was a spectacular effort too, as he picked up the ball well into his own half and went on a mazy run before firing home.
Real Madrid had to wait until the 72nd minute to take the lead and it was the ever dependable Vinicius Jr who got the goal.
Karim Benzema was not playing due to injury and the winger continues to show Madrid do not need to be overly reliant on the France striker.
‘Vini’ scored in his fourth straight LaLiga game, becoming the youngest Los Blancos player to achieve that feat since Gonzalo Higuain in 2009.
Rodrygo got a third in the 89th minute, before Antonio Rudiger completed the second half rout deep into stoppage time.
The ex-Chelsea centre-back was lurking at the back post and volleyed home for his first goal for Real Madrid.
The victory helped them reclaim top spot from Barcelona, who had beaten Cadiz earlier this weekend.
Ancelotti’s side host RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday, before the Madrid derby against Atletico next weekend.
