Liverpool took charge against the Portuguese side in the quarter-final tie with goals from Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane, and Diaz sealing the win.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were made to work for it though, and will be very pleased to come away with a healthy advantage going into the second leg at Anfield in what was an intense atmosphere.

The Benfica supporters certainly played their part, giving the team immense support, and jeering the Liverpool players whenever they had the ball.

None more so than the Colombian, who has a played against them before during his time with Porto.

However, there were some unsavoury scenes as both he and Robertson had objects thrown at them.

Thankfully, neither player was harmed, and Scotland captain Robertson managed to make light of the situation.

“I had quite a few lighters thrown at me – maybe it will help them stop smoking?! You’ve got to take the positives,” he said.

“We’ve seen it a lot, people getting hit, luckily they were all quite close to me but they didn’t hit me.

“It’s tough when it’s late in the game and the fans are frustrated but you should not throw stuff onto the pitch. It could hurt people.

“I was just trying to take the corner and get out of there as quick as possible.”

Sadly, this isn’t the first time disorder has marred elite-level matches this season, with Manchester United fans throwing items at Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone in the Champions League.

Antonio Rudiger was also struck by some Tottenham fans in January, which led to two arrests.

In Portugal, Diaz was on the receiving end after scoring to make it 3-1.

He was celebrating his goal in the corner of the ground, near where some of the Benfica fans were sat.
